When Carrol Shelby decided to take on Ferrari on their home turf in Europe one of the things that was immediately apparent was that the Cobra Roadster as sleek as it looked was an aerodynamic brick at high speed. This meant that there was a practical limit to the top speed that the car was capablle of – regardless of how much power you put into it.

The European tracks  like Le Mans had straight stretches that ran for miles thus allowing capable cars to run away from the roadster at the top end. Out of this came the need for a car that had more top end ability and out of that need arose the Daytona Coupe. With its aerodynamically efficient shape the car ran a solid 25 MPH faster at the top end than the Cobra  – with the same power!

What is even more remarkable is that Pete Brock, the cars designer and builder had the car on the track for the first time a mere six months after it was first roughed out as a design on paper. There were only 6 built as they were intended only as a purpose built car designed to end Ferrari`s reign on the podieum and in the end that is precisely what they did.

To gain an insight on the aerodynamics of the Daytona watch the video and note that the Cobra holds its own until they hit the straight stretch  (just less than 2 Min`s in) where it loses out to the sleeker Daytona coupe.

So, if you wanted an original Daytona Coupe today it would cost as much as a small country, but there is an affordable alternative from Factory Five Racing and that is what these pages are all about.
